New for spring…and a call-out for San Francisco local knowledge

A+ skirt with Julia cardigan // Behind the HedgerowInspired by an upcoming blogger’s weekend in Paris (more on that very soon 馃槈 ), I decided to make a spring ensemble to rival the sunniest day!

Early tomorrow morning we’re off to San Francisco (eek!!!) – and right now it’s 10.30pm – and I haven’t packed yet – so this will be a brief post filled with brightly coloured pictures and me looking a bit awkward in front of the camera (out of practice!!).

The Skirt…

…is the A+ skirt by Make it Perfect patterns. 聽It’s a classic a-line shape with a top yoke and different versions to include pockets, button placket, or ribbon detail. 聽Overall the pattern is well-drafted and clearly explained. 聽Just a few things to note:

  • The top yoke is unlined. 聽I thought this wouldn’t have enough structure so I added a facing using the same pattern piece as for the yoke itself. 聽I also used some fusible interfacing on the facing piece. 聽A quick fix for a more structured waist.
  • I lined the skirt. 聽I attached it to the seam line of the yoke/skirt (wrong sides together) and this worked well.
  • My measurements were in between a small and medium and I made the medium. 聽Now that I try it on I think it’s a bit too big. 聽With a skirt like this you want it to be pretty snug so it stays in place.
  • I love the pockets on the skirt but I find them a little too low.
  • I do love an a-line shape in skirts but, for me, this one is a bit too flared. 聽I’m being really picky because it’s only marginally wider than I would like.
  • The zip insertion and instructions are great. 聽I almost always do an invisible zip but聽I think I now might be a convert to the lapped zip!

To make this my perfect a-line skirt, next time I would use the facing and lining as described above, make the yoke piece slightly narrower which would bring the pockets up a bit higher, size down to small, and make the a-line shape a little less pronounced.

The cardigan…

…is the Julia Cardigan by Mouse House Creations. 聽This is the second time I’ve sewn this pattern. 聽This is the first version I made.

julia-cardi-title-image-21This is one of my most-warn cardigans (and that’s saying a lot considering it doesn’t even have pockets!!). 聽You can read a full pattern review here.

With such a love for this pattern,聽I didn’t change much in this version. 聽In fact, the only thing I changed was the sleeve length (long sleeves to 3/4 length sleeves). 聽The fabric itself is much thinner so it drapes a bit differently but I think I’ll love this one just as much.

Overall, I love my new cheery spring outfit. 聽I can see many sunny days sipping cocktails in the sun…

And now onto our holiday…

Yup, we’re off to San Francisco. 聽I’m American, I live in England, and everyone I meet here assumes I know San Francisco like the back of my hand. 聽The truth is I’ve never been to California at all! 聽We’re visiting some dear friends but that’s not to say I won’t have plenty of time for fabric and haberdashery shopping! 聽So, do any of you out there have any not-to-be-missed suggestions (fabric or otherwise)?! 聽Where to get the best Japanese food? 聽Is Alcatraz worth doing? 聽Any good day trip ideas with kids? 聽If you want to follow any of our shenanigans and discoveries make sure to follow on Instagram.

Thanks to you all for reading and here’s hoping that spring and sunshine will be filling your days!

Meridian Cardigan Pattern Tour and Giveaway – KCW Winter 2014 – Day Two

Meridian Cardigan (imagine gnats) // Behind the Hedgerow

Whew – that’s a long title! 聽Today is the second day of聽Kid’s Clothes Week, winter 2014聽but it’s also the day I’m participating in the imagine gnats pattern tour…and with every good pattern tour comes a GIVEAWAY!

Rachael, the one-woman whirlwind behind imagine gnats, is an independent pattern designer who makes perfectly stylish and comfortable clothes for children as well as women (and she even has an embroidery pattern). 聽I’ve made the Bess Top (which I love!) so for this tour I decided to try something for one of the little people in my life.

Here I present you with the Child’s Meridian Cardigan.

In case you’re interested, the trousers are Zonen 09’s Jacob pattern which you can read all about here.

If you were reading yesterday you’ll know that I’m keeping these posts short and sweet so as to maximise the time in front of my sewing machine. 聽I’ve asked myself a few questions that you can quickly read through before hopping over to another fantastic blog with more inspiring kid’s clothes!

What did you make?

Imagine gnats’ Meridian Cardigan – child version. 聽This is a downloadable PDF pattern with clear instructions and useful illustrations. 聽It’s made with knit/jersey fabric and there are instructions to make it a cardigan (like I did) or a jacket with a collar. 聽Rachael gives lots of options for button/snap placement.

Size and fabric?

Unsurprisingly, I made a size 6 for my 6-year-old. 聽Her measurements were on the small side for this pattern and I think I could have got away with a size 5. 聽There is definitely lots of growing room here and, as you can see, the cut is quite generous. 聽She loves it though – more delicious fabric to wrap herself in!

This cardigan is reversible – did I mention that?! – reversible! 聽The solid side is a lush aubergine jersey from Minerva crafts. 聽The fabulous floral knit is from de Stoffenkamer in Gent. 聽I adore the colour palette of this fabric and my only regret with this make is that my daughter gets to be covered in beautiful flowers and not me!

Did you enjoy making them?

Yes, I did actually. 聽It’s very easy and would be a great聽project for someone new to sewing with knits. 聽The sleeves are raglan so there’s nothing to set and there are no exposed seams (once you sew the two sides together you turn it right side out through one of the sleeves). 聽I was enjoying the process so much that I even took the time to hand stitch the sleeve cuffs together!

Favourite part of finished garment?

I love the easy style of this cardigan. 聽The double layer of fabric gives it a nice weight and it’s easy to throw on and off in these cold months of layering many garments. 聽Margot likes the swishy-ness of it.

Meridian Cardigan (imagine gnats) // Behind the Hedgerow

The part that made you swear the most?

I actually don’t think I swore once making this! 聽That’s gotta be a good sign. 聽My top-stitching all the way around went a little wonky but I’m still glad I did it because it keeps the layers together nicely.

Meridian Cardigan (imagine gnats) // Behind the Hedgerow

Music you were listening to?

Still listening to聽Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. 聽Saw them in concert last night here in Belgium and it was phenomenal! 聽Great music to sew by!

Sum them up in 10 words or less?

great beginner project for knits, perfect for layering.

Meridian Cardigan (imagine gnats) // Behind the Hedgerow

Would you make it again? 聽What would you do differently?

Yes! 聽This would make a great gift as well since you don’t need to know exact sizes and you really can knock this out in one sitting.

Next time I’ll give more thought to the button placement. 聽At the moment I haven’t added any buttons – I want to see how Margot wears it and what makes most sense in terms of closures. 聽As we all know, buttonholes are so final and I don’t want to get the placement wrong!
